Apple TV+ Reportedly Losing $1 Billion Annually Despite Prestige Content

Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV+, is reportedly operating at a significant loss, with an annual shortfall exceeding $1 billion, according to a report from The Information. This makes it the only unprofitable service within Apple’s portfolio.

Since its launch in 2019, Apple TV+ has consistently invested heavily in content, spending approximately $5 billion annually. In 2024, that number was slightly reduced to $4.5 billion. The platform has built a reputation for high-quality original programming, producing critically acclaimed shows such as Severance, Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Silo, and Shrinking.

Despite earning over 2,500 award nominations and wins, Apple TV+ continues to lag behind competitors like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video in terms of subscriber count.

While Apple does not disclose its exact subscriber numbers, estimates suggest Apple TV+ has around 45 million subscribers. In contrast, Netflix leads the industry with a staggering 301 million subscribers, highlighting the significant gap Apple must bridge to compete at the highest level.

Apple has yet to comment on the report, but as the streaming landscape becomes increasingly competitive, the company faces challenges in turning Apple TV+ into a profitable venture. Whether through strategic content adjustments, pricing changes, or bundling with other Apple services, the tech giant will need to explore new avenues to close the gap and make its streaming division financially sustainable.
